CO2–extract of melilot is a dense pasty deep-green liquid. Odour of the extract is specific – coumarin-like; bitter to the taste. The extract can be dissolved in alcohol or oils, but cannot in water. Extract of melilot contains considerable quantity of coumarin and its derivative; coumaric acid, choline, tannin, resinous substances, dicumarol, derivatives of purine, allantion and allantion acid, flavonol glycoside, and essential oils.
The coumarin is the main active principle in the extract of melilot, it determines biological activity of the extract. Due to coumarin extract of melilot makes for increasing systolic arterial pressure, makes better peripheral and cerebral blood supply, makes better blood circulation of abdominal cavity organs, stimulates increasing amount of leukocytes. Healing power of melilot was described by Galen and Avicenna in their ancient treatises.
CO2–extract of melilot can be used in medicine – in anticonvulsant preparations, at stenocardia, at coronary thrombosis, and at rheumatism. Due to the above mentioned complex of biologically-active substances, extract of melilot has anodyne, expectoration, and antiinflammatory properties. Also extract of melilot is used in perfumery and food industries – as aromatizer and odour stabilizer; in household chemistry – as anti-moth preparation; as aromatizer of tobacco and alcohol production.
