CO2–extract of calendula is an oily pasty substance from yellow to brown colour, with strong odour of calendula flowers, bitter to the taste. The extract can be dissolved in alcohol or oils, but cannot in water. Chemical composition of the extract is rich of biologically active substances. Extract of calendula contains a class of carotinoids, resins, organic acids, alkaloids, bitter substances, saponins, flavonoids, phytoncides, styrene, coumarin, triterpenic glycosides, and essential oils.
Extract of calendula has a wide range of pharmacologic properties: antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, antispasmodic, and cholagogue properties. Its bactericidal activity is very strong against pathogenic organisms, especially staphylococcus and streptococcus.
CO2–extract of calendula used in medicine: preparations based on extract of calendula increase the liver activity, make better a gall composition, calm the central nervous system, lower reflex excitability. As a food addition extract of calendula imparts nice-looking coloration, restorative and antiseptic properties to foodstuff.
