CO2–extract of salvia is an oily pasty liquid with a specific spicy odour and astringent to the taste. The colour is from light-brown to deep-brown. The extract can be dissolved in alcohol or oils, but cannot in water. Extract of salvia contains vitamins P and PP, resins, tannin, flavonoids, carotinoids, chlorophyll, bitters, free organic acids, phosphatides, sterol, glycerides, wax, and essential oils (cineole, thujone, boras camphor, oleic and ursolic acids).
Due to vitamins P and PP, essential oils, and flavonoids extract of salvia has antiinflammatory and bactericidal properties. Antibacterial activity is strongest to gram-positive bacteria.
